Frequently Asked Questions

·   Where do the Luau events take place?

Fri/Sat Grass: The Friday & Saturday events take place at Sydney Marovitz Golf Course, located just east of Lake Shore Drive between Waveland and Montrose. There is limited parking available from Irving Park/Recreation Drive exits (these will fill up early) and plentiful parking from Montrose exit. If you are driving yourself, the best address to use is 400 W Montrose Ave. If you take a ride share, the golf course address is best at 1701 N Recreation Drive.

Sun Sand: The Sunday sand events take place at North Avenue Beach, located at 1600 N Lake Shore Drive in Chicago. The blue boathouse is a great landmark. The event will be just south of that on Rows C through J and the Special Event area.

·   Beer is included with all Saturday tournament & spectator registration. What are the details?

We are proud to have beer/seltzer for The Luau Grass Championships on Saturday 9/9! Each year we go through over 100 kegs! Exact products are TBA. The event is all-you-can-drink from 10:30 AM until 6 PM (21 & over). No outside alcohol is permitted per Park District rules.

·   Is food available on site? Can I bring a cooler with food?

Players are welcome to bring coolers with food, non-alcoholic drinks, etc. Additionally we are offering two fantastic food truck options on site.

·   Where can I park for the Grass Championships on Saturday?

Exit Lake Shore Drive at Montrose (400 W Montrose Ave) and park along Montrose Ave or in the lot on the North side of Montrose Ave. Please read all signage carefully as there are some spots in the area (incl the lot) with pay boxes. There is limited paid parking available if you exit at Irving Park Rd or Recreation Dr. This area is one lane each way & will get congested once parking is full. WE STRONGLY RECCOMMEND PEOPLE PARK ON MONTROSE!

·   Where can I park for the Beach events on Sunday?

Parking is very dependent on what time you get to the beach. If you arrive early, you can park in the pay lot closest to Castaways right at North Ave & Lake Shore Dr. This lot fills up extremely quickly. There is also a pay lot on Cannon just north of North Avenue. The Lincoln Park Zoo lot is accessible off Fullerton & has parking that usually doesn't fill up until after 12 PM. If you want to try to find free street parking, look on Cannon, Stockton and Lincoln Park West between Fullerton & Diversey & plan for a hike.

·   What should I bring? Is there anything I can't bring to the events?

Players are encouraged to bring sunscreen, snacks, volleyballs & other volleyball-related gear. Canopies & tents are allowed (except in designated "no canopy" zones), but please be sure to stake/secure your tent into the ground. You can bring coolers with food & drinks, but no outside alcohol is permitted. Water is complementary & will be available on site. Dogs, weapons, outside alcohol, illegal drugs, grumpy people, grills & any set-ups larger than 10x10 are not allowed.

·   How does Check In work for the Saturday Grass tournament? Can I get check in on Friday to get it out of the way?

As you can imagine, getting 400+ teams checked in prior to the tournament starting on Saturday morning is a difficult task. It is essential that we have all teams checked in prior to your tournament start time so that we can ensure pool play starts on time and that the tournament runs smoothly. We only need captains to check in for their entire team. At check in, captains will receive a park map and an entry ticket for each paid person on his/her team. Everyone must bring that entry ticket along with their ID to enter the course on Saturday. You can check in for the Saturday grass tournament ON SATURDAY at THE GOLF COURSE between 7:00 AM & your Tournament Start Time - 8 AM for 3's, 9 AM for 4's/6's, 11 AM for Field Day

·   How does my tournament work? What time do I start? What should I expect?

All tournaments will use a pool play format with the top teams advancing to the Championship Bracket. For the grass events only, the bottom teams advance to the Beer Bracket. For sand events, there is no Beer Bracket. Times are as follows:

Friday Volleyball - 12:30 PM start time. Pool play ends around 4:00 PM. Playoffs end by 6 PM.

Saturday Volleyball Triples - 8 AM start time. Pool play ends around 1:30 PM. Playoffs end by 6 PM.

Saturday Volleyball Quads/Sixes - 9 AM start time. Pool play ends around 1:30 PM. Playoffs end by 5 PM.

Saturday Cornhole - 11 PM start time. Pool play ends around 1 PM. Playoffs end by 3 PM.

Sunday Volleyball - 9 AM start time. Pool play ends around 1:30. Playoffs end by 4:30 PM

***Check in opens an hour before your tournament is scheduled to start. No walk up tournament registration will be permitted.

·   Can my friends & family come watch? How much does it cost?

Spectators over the age of 21 must purchase a ticket to enter for Saturday. Tickets cost $20 ahead of time online or can be purchased on site. Entry includes all-you-can-drink beer/seltzer as well access to our vendors and the party! Spectators under the age of 21 will are able to enter at no cost, but they will be given a different wristband. There is no cost for spectators on Sunday at the beach tournament.

·  Will there be a photographer on site taking pictures?

Yes we have several photographers to take pictures of all tournament teams and at the party. We'll post a huge album on Facebook the week after the event, so you can tag yourself and your friends!

·  Are there opportunities for me to help out with the event and still play in the tournament?

We are always looking for people to add to our Luau Staff, especially for net set up on Friday during the day. If you are looking to help before & after you play on Saturday, we might be able to put you to work doing that as well. Contact jeff@playerssports.net for more information.

·  How can I share my Luau experience during and after the event?

Be sure to RSVP to the Luau Facebook event page to let your friends know you are going! Use the hashtags #luau and tag us @PlayersChicago when you post on Tik Tok & Instagram. Be sure to tag yourself & your friends in the event photos. Most importantly, tell your friends what a great time you had at the Luau this year & bring them back with you next year!

Great people and great vibes. If you're looking to get out and meet some people while having fun then Players Sports is for you. There are leagues and tournaments for a bunch of different sports. They run them for all skill levels and you get cool shirts if you win. Also a lot of free promos - they give out a lot of drinks and other stuff. Overall, very fun and very friendly environment.

Lucas M.

For the last three years, I have been playing indoor and beach volleyball with Players Sport & Social. They are always exceptional and professional. My favorite part of the leagues is the cadence and the different formats that they offer; whether you want to play Rec vs Competitive or 2s vs 6s - they have it all! They also have referees for all of their indoor leagues, and they are prompt to email requests.

Luis A.

Love attending the Luau tournaments they host! Such a fun environment they set up!

Players Sports Volleyball tournaments are great! Always well-organized, and fun to meet and hang out with friends.

I've been competing in their leagues and tournaments for years. Always well run and a good time.
